Scenario Planning Prompt Templates for FP&A Teams
Scenario planning becomes useful when assumptions are explicit and actions are tied to thresholds. Prompt templates help FP&A teams produce scenarios leaders can actually use.

Video briefing: variance commentary leaders can act on
A concise framework for separating one-off effects, recurring drivers, and owner-level action plans.
Define scenario inputs clearly
Start with assumptions for demand, pricing, margin, and cash timing. Ask the model to list sensitivity ranges so everyone sees what drives outcome changes.
Include external assumptions (rate environment, sector demand, FX) separately from internal execution assumptions.
Request outputs by decision relevance
Rather than long reports, ask for scenario outputs in executive format: expected range, key risk, and trigger to act. That is the language leaders need in planning sessions.
For each scenario, add one sentence on data quality so leaders understand which assumptions are still fragile.
Link each scenario to playbooks
Every scenario should map to operational actions. For example, if downside probability rises above threshold, which hiring, spend, or pricing moves happen first?
Prompting for playbooks prevents scenario work from becoming a slide exercise.
Review cadence matters
Set a monthly review rhythm and update assumptions with fresh data. Scenario quality compounds when teams treat templates as living tools, not one-off deliverables.
Close each cycle with a short retrospective: what assumption moved most and which trigger was least useful.
